Fingle Lecture Series 2017: What’s On?
Join us for another season of walks and talks
Throughout 2017 we’re offering another series of lectures about Fingle’sfascinating wildlife, history and restoration. Below is a little taster of the first five talks, so you can pop the dates in your diary. The first talk of the year is this Thursday at the Fingle Bridge Inn, we hope to see you there!
Bird Monitoring
Thursday 2nd February, 7pm, Fingle Bridge InnHelen Booker and Dr Malcolm Burgess from the RSPB will talk about the bird surveying that is currently taking place in Fingle. Join us for this talk to learn more about their work to develop a woodland management ‘toolkit’ and two projects, one to monitor marsh tits, spotted flycatchers and pied flycatchers and the other to monitor wood warblers.
From Birmingham to Fingle via the world: the life and times of Harry Price
Thursday 2nd March, 7pm, Fingle Bridge Inn
After an adventurous and heroic life at sea (including a royal tour), Harry settled in Drewsteignton and helped to turn the tea-hut at the Fingle Bridge into the thriving place it is today. Bill Hardiman’s talk will explore the fascinating life of Harry Price and his connection with Fingle Woods and Castle Drogo.
RSPB Woodland Tool Kit Walk
Thursday 6th April, 6pm, meet at the Fingle Bridge Inn
A follow up from February’s bird monitoring talk. This walk is a chance to visit one of our bird monitoring plots and learn more about the surveying techniques being used and how our management of Fingle Woods is making the habitats more bird friendly.
A return to Wooston Castle
Thursday 4th May, 6pm, meet at the Fingle Bridge Inn
After the popularity of last autumn’s ‘Revealing Wooston Castle’ walk, this is an opportunity to return to the iron-age hillfort to see what progress has been made, in particular the extent of the revealed site and the spectacular views gained by the felling of the trees. We will be joined by two archaeologists who will hopefully share the results from the geophys survey of the site and share plans for the upcoming excavation.
All the Moor Butterflies
Thursday 1st June, 7pm, Fingle Bridge Inn
Join Simon Phelps, Conservation Officer on Butterfly Conservation’s exciting, new ‘All the Moor Butterflies’ project to learn about Dartmoor’s special butterflies and moths, and the work taking place to save them.
